Ngaio

I have to admit I am a little bit obsessed with the Polynesian culture. Particularly the patterns they’re tough, hardy and functional but stunning. This is a tremendously simplified version of a pattern (on the dress) which is a combination of Shark teeth and the ocean which each have a separate meaning, the teeth mean adaptability and power, whilst the ocean is a symbol of the nether world or death. I tried to make the ocean hand-like in reference to the embrace of death as well as a reference to the Claddagh. As for the tattoo its a combination between a shell and a turtle shell, the turtle meaning peace and longevity, whilst the sea shell meaning intimacy and marriage. The idea is it’s meant to symbolise the balance of both, what we wrap ourselves in and what we hold close to us.
